چکیده

Neck cutoff is a sudden phenomenon that occurs during the evolution of meandering rivers, but its process and mechanism remain unclear. In this investigation, neck-narrowing before cutoff, formation new river, appropriate conditions for under constant variable discharges were studied using experimental methods in laboratory flume. The results indicated bank erosion upstream downstream neck was main factor triggered regardless whether discharge changed. sinuosity model river approximately 7, ratio width to average reached 0.43, material nonuniform natural sand. Under unit ranged from 0.0039 0.0069 m2/s longitudinal gradient 1‰, could occur after sufficient erosion. When imminent, channel increased rotated downstream. After experienced three stages, namely, short-term scouring stage, long-term horizontal widening transverse normal slow development stage. resulting effective contributing directly affected time position. We attempted explain factors leading an energy consumption perspective. occurred when maximum value upon entry recession stage relative equilibrium To certain extent, study significant understanding cutoff.

River meandering dynamics.

The Ikeda, Parker, and Sawai river meandering model is reexamined using a physical approach employing an explicit equation of motion. For periodic river shapes as seen from above, a cross-stream surface elevation gradient creates a velocity shear that is responsible for the decay of small-wavelength meander bends, whereas secondary currents in the plane perpendicular to the downstream direction...

Critical wavelength for river meandering.

A fully nonlinear modal analysis identifies a critical centerline wave number q(c) for river meandering that separates long-wavelength bends, which grow to cutoff, from short-wavelength bends, which decay. Exact, numerical, and approximate analytical results for q(c) rely on the Ikeda, Parker, and Sawai [J. Fluid Mech. 112, 363 (1981)] model, supplemented by dynamical equations that govern the ...

Experimental investigation on turbidity current venting under restrained outflow discharges

Reservoir sedimentation is a worldwide problem affecting sustainable storage use as well as sediment transport downstream of dams. Various techniques are applied for sediment mitigation, among which, venting of turbidity currents. This paper reviews, discusses and evaluates venting of turbidity currents based on an experimental approach. Data acquisition during the tests is accomplished using f...
